WHAT IS HEALTHY SEX?

This is a question I hear over and over again...and rightfully so. Most of the people I see in my practice grew up in families where sex was never discussed, and information was obtained by peers, porn, and prostitutes. Obviously, this is a slanted viewpoint on what sex is, and sex education in schools doesn’t confront real issues of intimacy. Finally, one definition doesn’t fit all...it is somewhat like trying to get everyone to believe in one religion. The best starting point seems to be safety for self and others.

ABOUT INTIMACY

What on earth IS intimacy? We can open up the dictionary to find a very un-intimate definition of the word. One way to define intimacy is to look at what it is not:

 

 

Intimacy is not one-night stands or anonymous sex.

 

Intimacy is not looking at pornography or cyberporn.

 

Intimacy is not forcing someone to do something they don’t want to do

The one thing these three examples all have in common is a lack of connection between two people. Even though there may or may not be an agreement between both parties, they all have little in the way of vulnerability  or openness.
